PCD Reamer vs Carbide Reamer: When to Switch
Carbide reamers are practical for many general machining jobs. PCD reamers become attractive when tool wear, bore size drift, poor surface finish or frequent tool changes begin to raise the real cost per hole.
Best material fit
PCD is strongest in aluminum alloys, copper, brass, graphite, plastics, CFRP and other abrasive or non-ferrous materials. Carbide is usually preferred for steels and many ferrous materials.
Where PCD wins
- High-volume production with stable bore tolerance requirements.
- Abrasive materials that wear carbide quickly.
- Fine surface finish requirements where edge wear causes visible drift.
- Processes where fewer tool changes improve machine uptime.
How to decide
Compare annual volume, current tool life, scrap caused by bore quality, downtime for tool changes and part value. If those costs are high, a custom PCD reamer can reduce total machining cost even when the tool price is higher.
